Music Therapy: An Instrument towards the Well Being of the Mind

Photo and Graphic Design by Nina

Do you believe that good and positive music is good for our mental well-being? In a heartbeat, I would say yes. I am so amazed and fascinated that there is such a thing as Music Therapy. I have been a music lover since I reached my teenage years. Every day when wake up I would turn up my radio to listen to music. I love music so much I would listen to it all day on weekends.

I enjoyed listening to my stereo more than watching television. I would even have music playing in the background when I was studying. There is something about music that just cheers up the heart and brightens up the mood. I guess growing up as an only daughter, music kept me well. Music calms me when I am overwhelmed, tired, stressed and sad. When I sing positive songs, I can breathe properly. I can feel good when I start to dislike myself or my situation. I feel a boost of self-competence, energy and happiness. I feel like myself again. The kind of me who always accomplishes tasks, feels meaningfulness and self-fulfillment.
Music is definitely a Dopamine and Serotonin rush. It improved my work performance in Sales and Retention. It inspires me to write more poetry. The music I love listening to are positive songs of:
  1. Hanson (Feeling Alive, Joyful Noise, Fired Up, I’ve Got Soul and I Was Born
  2. Owl City
  3. Coldplay
  4. No one by Alicia Keys
  5. One Day by Charice
  6. Cameron James (You Can Do Anything and Game Changer)
  7. You're Worth It by Cimorelli
  8. Daydream by Lily Meola
  9. I Make my Own Sunshine by Alyssa Bonagura
  10. Eine Kleine Nachtmusic by Mozart
  11. Lean on Me Mash Up Sam Tsui and Casey Breves (positive layered music)
  12. MCGI praise and worship
  13.  Aleluya
  14. Masdan
  15. Alam Niya
  16. Ama Salamat
  17. God will win our Fight
  18. Ito ang Araw
  19. Mahal Mo Ako
  20. Magwawagi
  21. Pag Asa
  22. Sigaw ng Puso
  23. Tunay na Buhay
  24. Sa Isang Sulok ng Paraiso
Did you know that Music came from God and that He sang when He created the world? Well I learned that at our church when our Preacher read it in the Bible. Amazing, right? But that is another story. Ever since I found God at MCGI, I loved listening to all MCGI praise and worship songs. They continue to fill my heart with comfort, cheer, peace and God’s love. Truly these songs kept ill spirits away. It is written in the Bible that songs to God have protection and saving power just like in 1 Samuel 16:23. It says: “And whenever the harmful spirit from God was upon Saul, David took the lyre and played it with his hand. So Saul was refreshed and was well, and the harmful spirit departed from him.”
Going back to Music Therapy, research says that it can help enhance physical, psychological and social well-being. It eases Anxiety, Autism, Depression, Dementia, Insomnia, Personality Issues, Schizophrenia and Substance Dependency. Music improves communication, coping skills, self-esteem, sociability and tolerance for pain and stress. I also read that Music Therapy has 2 techniques – Active Music Therapy and Receptive Music Therapy. The first technique is done through chanting, playing musical instruments, music composition and singing. The second technique includes dancing or analysis of music lyrics. Among these 2 Music Therapy techniques, I mostly enjoy doing the Receptive Technique. I dance to upbeat positive songs. I analyze the lyrics of songs. It would be awesome to have Music Therapy with a Licensed Music Therapist. Nonetheless, as for now, my Music Self-Therapy works for me so far. I can greatly confirm that Music Therapy even if it is just for self-care, is a very effective way of taking care of our mental well-being.
Do you also find music calming, energizing, soothing and uplifting? What music do you listen to? Feel free to share with me in the comments. If ever you enjoyed or found this blog interesting, you can always follow, like and share. Have a music filled day.
